Refined Sugar, Enriched Flour
and other Carbohydrates
These are favorite foods for many people, and very tasty.
How many times have adults spoken with children with the
phrase that "you can't eat only what tastes good, you have to eat what is
good for you"?
Why would it be that what is best for us is not what tastes
best? How can that make any sense? Why would God have something like this
in our lives? Is it because God loves to tease us? (or to torture us?)
Maybe, but I prefer to believe something else.
I believe that God knows how self-centered we can be, and how thick-skulled we can
be. Well, let me put it another way: God knows how thick-skulled I am and if and
when God wants to make a point with me, God knows that it will be quite a task!
So, to help me finally get the point, God is persistent, patient and creative.
He makes the point over-and-over again in many different ways in the hope that
one of the examples will get through to me!
In my forty-plus years of life, I have seen many examples of how what looks good, what
feels good is not what is good.
Let's look at what it
would be like if it were not so. What if you could judge the quality of a person
by their physical appearance? You know, the more attractive the woman the better
a person she really was? Or what if only the handsome men were spiritually deep? Or if chocolate was really good for you? If sugar was nutritious?
Then, I would not need to develop self-control, nor should you. We could stay self-centered and not be concerned about where other people were at in their
spiritual walk. We could be narcisitic to the extreme, and all stay childish.
We could all be "spoiled brats" who believe that the world revolves around
us. We could start to believe that we are "entitled" to having everything our
own way.
We wouldn't have to grow up! Mind you, I am not saying that I have done it yet, but
I do see some progress!
Well, some still don't grow up, but they have less of an excuse. The
environment is less supportive of their self-indulgence.
So, what did I have to learn, I mean . . . what DO I have to learn? That what I like, is not what is best. I am
not the best judge of what is best, because I am involved. I am not objective
enough, especially when emotionally involved (or hungry!).
To have what is best happen, I need to put my ego and desires aside, and use God's
standards for what is best.
