A steady diet of pre-digested (milk) and refined or processed foods

Pre-digested, refined, processed foods are all foods that have been pre-digested for us, either by another animal, or by machines, or equipment. Another example of this is the difference between eating cooked vegetables and raw vegetables. By cooking, we make them softer and change the taste. We also remove many vitamins and nutrients that way. Medical science today warns us to eat from 5 to 9 servings of RAW fruits and vegetable every day. But, we don't. Why is such a diet of undigested food so healthy?

Many of those that believe in eating natural foods seem to want us to do our own digesting. Do our own chewing. Do our own metabolizing of our nutrients for the sake of our physical beings. There is discussion going on about the value of nutrition that is pre-processed, or synthetic. Many people believe in herbs, partially because they are natural. The discussion is that as long as our bodies are natural, the nutritional support for them should also be as natural as possible.

Taking this to a spiritual level, note that in the Bible, both Jeremiah and Jesus spoke out strongly against religious leaders of their day. James also warned about wanting to be religious teachers. Many of us want someone else to tell us about God, about God’s ways and about spirituality. We seek these people out, and want them to digest spirituality for us and hand us the final product. We are willing to go listen to them, give them some money, and leave thinking we have done ourselves wonderful spiritual nutrition. I contend that we may not be spiritual well-fed if we are not doing our own digesting.

Just as eating processed or digested foods does not contribute in the best way to our physical growth, divulging ourselves of purely processed or digested spirituality does not help us to mature as far as possible for humans to reach. Let me give you an example from the Christian perspective. Here is something that happens to many Christians that never digest their own food:

I have been found by people that are very angry at God, because they have had a difficulty on earth. Whether it was the death of a loved one, the death of their marriage, being fired from a great job, or some other 'terrible' loss. In their grief, they have told me countless of times, how Jesus was supposed to have saved them from this pain. They have misunderstood what 'salvation' means, and at this speed-bump in their life, they panic. Now, I do not want to understate the intensity of the pain, nor the greatness of the loss. I have been there myself, and will be there again. What I refer to is how these people have been 'blind-sided' by what happened to them. A non-Christian example of this is the people that believe so fervently in what is called "Positive Mental Attitude", or PMA. While I believe I will make it through whatever life throws at me, I do not condone the mistaken belief that nothing bad will ever happen to me or my loved ones.

If we don't digest the wonderful lessons of PMA, or from the Bible, or from the Koran, or wherever they are around us, then we will misunderstand them, and be shallower than best.

True for our bodies, and true for our spirits.
