Natures

There are several different "natures" or "personalities" that affect your Pokemon's development. Once you understand your Pokemon, you can then try to raise Pokemon which are more powerful.

Also, the Nature of a Pokemon determines which flavors of Pokeblocks they enjoy and benefit from the most, as well as the flavors they dislike. That can be important when it comes to winning Pokemon Contests, especially at the Masters Rank.

There are five natures that have no impact on your Pokemon, which means they develop with no special influence from their nature. These are:

Bashful, Docile, Hardy, Quirky and Serious.

Four Natures accelerate the growth of "Attack", at the cost of another skill. These are:

Adamant (Special Attack rises slower), Brave (Speed rises slower),
Lonely (Defense rises slower) and Naughty (Special Defense rises slower)

Four Natures accelerate the growth of "Special Attack", at the cost of another skill. These are:

Modest (Attack rises slower), Quiet (Speed rises slower),
Mild (Defense rises slower),  and Rash (Special Defense rises slower)

Four Natures accelerate the growth of "Defense", at the cost of another skill. These are:

Bold (Attack rises slower), Impish (Special Attack rises slower),
Relaxed (Speed rises slower), and Lax (Special Defense rises slower).

Four Natures accelerate the growth of "Special Defense", at the cost of another skill. These are:

Calm (Attack rises slower), Careful (Special Attack rises slower),
Sassy (Speed rises slower), and Gentle (Defense rises slower).

Four Natures accelerate the growth of "Speed", at the cost of another skill. These are:

Jolly (Special Attack rises slower), Timid (Attack rises slower),
Hasty (Defense rises slower), and Naive (Special Defense rises slower).

For example, you want to have a better Dodrio, and you have already decided that the best attacks for your Dodrio are either flying or normal attacks, which means you will never use your Special Attack number. If these are your decisions, then you can afford to have a Dodrio with a lower Special Attack! If you want a faster Dodrio, get a Jolly one. A stronger attacking one would be an Adamant one. I do not like sacrificing either one of the Defenses, because you never know who will be attacking you, nor which attack they will be using!

Another example, a Modest Pikachu would have a higher Special Attack for all those Thunderbolts, while having a lower Attack. A Timid Pikachu would have a higher Speed, while having a lower Attack. Don't forget that the "Macho Brace" is an item that promotes growth at the expense of speed, so you may want to think about which Pokemon would benefit from wearing one as it grows!

Again, to pick the proper nature you have to have already decided which attacks you want this Pokemon to have!

To make best use of a Pokemon's nature, you have to train it properly! For more details on "training" your Pokemon to be the best that it can be, go to the page on Effort Values! Effort values have as much to do with a Pokemon's statistics as it's Nature does!
